Dr. Merrill graduated from Dartmouth College with honors in English Literature, then attended the Columbia School of Journalism and received a master's degree. He worked for three years as a newspaper reporter in suburban Boston. After leaving journalism, he worked in healthcare administration for several years, most recently as a research assistant and analyst at what is now Univera in Buffalo. He subsequently attended the SUNY Buffalo School of Medicine and acquired a master's degree in Epidemiology during his Residency. He was the attending medical physician at the Buffalo Psychiatric Center and practiced as a hosptialist at United Memorial and South Buffalo Mercy Hospital. He has written columns intermittently for the Buffalo News and published a book, "Vitamin D: Antidote to Winter and the Darkness." He is the recipient of the Bernard and Sophie Gottlieb Award and the Klocke Award.
