AIDS Community Health Center and AIDS Rochester to Recognize World AIDS Day through Education, Events and Entertainment

Just one month shy of their legal merger, AIDS Community Health Center and AIDS Rochester are working together to bring the important message of World AIDS Day to the community. While December 1 officially marks World AIDS Day, the organizations will participate in events throughout early December to promote HIV/AIDS education and prevention.

The World Health Organization established World AIDS Day in 1988. Observed annually, the day provides an opportunity to raise awareness and focus attention on the global AIDS epidemic.

In recognition of World AIDS Day, AIDS Community Health Center and AIDS Rochester will participate in the following events:

December 1 from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. - AIDS Community Health Center and AIDS Rochester will provide free HIV testing on a walk-in basis at 259 Monroe Avenue. Free HIV tests are available every Tuesday at these times.

December 1 from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Family Planning Center in Geneva - The Finger Lakes AIDS Task Force, AIDS Rochester and Family Planning Center are hosting an all-day testing event in honor of World AIDS Day to increase the number of people that know their status and get the word out that HIV is still a problem but we can do something about it.

December 1 from Noon to 2 p.m. at Monroe Community College Damon Center - AIDS Community Health Center will participate in a panel discussion and provide HIV counseling and testing at this event organized by The MOCHA Center.

December 1 at 7 p.m. at St. John Fisher College - "The Witnesses" will be shown as part of the college's "Tournees French Film Festival," followed by a discussion facilitated by AIDS Rochester.

December 1 at 7:30 p.m. at Lake Avenue Baptist Church - The 9th annual PeaceArt World AIDS Day Concert is focused on increasing awareness surrounding HIV/AIDS and the organizations that educate, test, and treat those impacted locally and abroad. The concert includes dance, song, and spoken word.

December 2 from 4:30-7:00 p.m. at the University of Rochester Health Services Building-HIV counseling and testing will be provided to University of Rochester students by appointment only.

December 2 at 5:15 p.m. at Immanuel Baptist Church - There will be a free meal for those infected and affected by HIV/AIDS, with resources available from community service providers, short testimonies, and an award ceremony.

December 2 at 7 p.m. at Immanuel Baptist Church - There will be a service, "Sharing the Gift of Love," with the message brought by Prince Singh, Bishop of Rochester Episcopal Diocese, with the Gospel Choir of Spiritus Christi Church.

December 3 from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. - AIDS Community Health Center and AIDS Rochester will provide free HIV testing on a walk in basis at 259 Monroe Avenue. Free HIV tests are available every Thursday at these times.

December 4 from 5 to 6 p.m. at the University of Rochester in Havens Lounge --AIDS Community Health Center is facilitating a panel discussion including medical experts and people living with HIV.

December 5 from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Unity Health System St. Mary's Campus - AIDS Community Health Center will participate in a panel discussion as part of Action for a Better Community's Health Education and Advocacy Response Team World AIDS Day Conference for Women.

December 6 at 8 and 11 a.m. at Zion Hill Baptist Church - Services followed by a presentation by AIDS Community Health Center Minority AIDS Initiative staff in recognition of World AIDS Day. HIV testing will also be available during both services.

December 7 from 4 to 7 p.m. at New Creations Unisex Shop - In collaboration with Willie Lightfoot, Jr.'s Cut the Violence Campaign the Minority AIDS Initiative will be conducting HIV testing.

"World AIDS Day provides an opportunity to raise awareness about this disease which impacts more than 33 million people worldwide," said Jay Rudman, president of AIDS Community Health Center and future Chief Executive Officer of the combined organization. "By joining forces, both on World AIDS Day and permanently through our upcoming merger, AIDS Community Health Center and AIDS Rochester can better serve the community through its combined mission and extended reach."
