As of 2005, the average life expectancy in the U.S. is 80.4 for women and 75.2 for men. That means men, on average, die 5.2 years earlier than women.5. This phenomenon is world-wide. Women outlive men almost everywhere in the world. As Second Opinion participant Thomas Perls, MD, says, "Women are very much the winners of the longevity marathon." Theories abound about why this is so. The one thing scientists say they know for sure is that there is no one magic bullet that explains the difference. They cite a number of genetic-biological and socio-cultural factors that may be at work.
