Ever wonder what doctors whisper about when you're not in the room? Find out each week on Second Opinion. Produced by WXXI Public Broadcasting in Rochester, New York, West 175 Productions in Seattle, Washington and University of Rochester Medical Center in Rochester, New York, the Second Opinion production team work extensively with a team of Medical Advisors to make sure you're getting solid medical information, making you a better consumer of your own healthcare! A fracture is a break, usually in a bone. If the broken bone punctures the skin, it is called an open or compound fracture. Fractures commonly happen because of car accidents, falls or sports injuries. Another cause is osteoporosis, which causes weakening of the bones. Overuse can cause stress fractures, which are very small cracks in the bone. (Source: MedlinePlus)
A hip fracture caused by a fall is a great fear and a reality for our aging population. Getting treatment and proper rehabilitation is key to getting mobility and independence back after a fall.
