The 2nd Annual REEL MIND is a collaborative effort sponsored by several area organizations and supported by a grant from The New York State Council on the Arts. The series features theatre and films about mental illness that promote hope despite difficult diagnoses, and which work to break down the stigma that remains so prevalent around issues of mental illness and addiction in our society.

Richard Ruston has been afflicted with paranoid schizophrenia as long as his daughter Delaney Ruston has known him. Out of shame, frustration and fear, for many years she hid from him, keeping her phone number and address unlisted. But now, as a young mother (and a practicing psychiatrist), Delaney finds herself pulled to reconnect with her father, and so begins this genuine, oft-times painful but ultimately moving look at the power of familial love in the face of enormous challenges.

As the story unfolds, Delaney attempts to better understand her father by meeting with the people involved in his life, past and present, and by referring to her father's autobiographically based novel that he wrote during the onset of his schizophrenia. But this journey is not without strain as Delaney faces the conflicts around caring for her father that have existed since her youth, including the constant tension of her dad wanting to go off treatment. When he finally does, Delaney finds herself on a race against time that is a matter of life and death.

Sharing touching and at times heartbreaking detail about the personal toll of mental illness, the film is a soul-searching examination into the nature of responsibility--of parents and children, of physicians and patients, of society and citizens towards those afflicted with severe mental illness.
